Amavasya (अमावस्या)
Amavasya means the lunar phase of the New moon in Sanskrit. Amavasya (अमावस्या), in Hindu mythology, means is a name given to the New Moon or no moon’s night.The Hindu calendar follows the lunar month and Amavasya, the new moon night, falls at the beginning of new lunar month which lasts for about 30 days. Meaning of Amavasya - अमावस्या
It is the darkest day in the Hindu month and also the last day in a month in the traditional Hindu calendars followed in Gujarat and Maharashtra.There are many Hindus who undertake a complete fast on Amavasya. Some Hindu communities only take a single meal on the day. The day is considered apt for doing Tarpan and Shradh for dead parents and other relatives.

Meaning of Purnima - पूर्णिमा
Purnima, or Poornima, is the full moon day in traditional Hindu calendar. The day is considered highly auspicious by Hindus and some communities fast or keep Vrat (Purnima fasting) from sunrise to sunset on the day. Poornima is known as Pournami in South India.As per Monier Williams Sanskrit-English Dictionary, Purnima means the night or day of full moon. All full moon days are considered important. However, Guru Purnima is given special importance. The first full moon that comes after the summer solstice in the month of Ashadha is known as Guru Purnima.
